Automotive Electrification: Battery-Powered, Connected Cars Require Innovative NVH Solutions

There are two undeniable trends that can be seen in nearly any industry: environmental consciousness and global connectivity. These themes drive many initiatives and influence new product development. A great example of this trend is the automotive market. Electric vehicles are becoming more commonplace every year, and, their electronics are becoming increasingly sophisticated and abundant. With these innovations comes a new challenge: how to protect these components from the unique noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) issues inherent in an automobile.

One NVH issue, located in the battery packs, represents a challenge to one of the most critical components of an electric vehicle system. These battery packs contain many cells which expand and contract throughout the charge and discharge cycle, requiring a conforming material to maintain separation and prevent damage. ISOLOSS™ LS and CONFOR™ EG foams provide a good solution with performance characteristics such as a low, flat compressive force deflection providing uniform pushback force up to 70% compression and high damping characteristics to reduce the negative effects of vibration and impacts.

Turning attention to the interior, it becomes clear that automobile manufacturers must concern themselves with NVH issues that were previously exclusive to the electronics industry, such as display protection, gasketing, and haptics.
